What is considered poverty level?

I am married, with one child. I have a degree and a full time job, as does my husband. We own a house and 2 cars. We do not live an extravagant lifestyle by any means. We are paying 5 different medical bills, because we don't qualify for medicaid. We buy generic diapers, wipes, and grocery food, because we don't qualify for food stamps. We dilute our 2-year old's juice still, just to make it last longer, and our fridge and pantry are never full. So how is it fair that we don't qualify for any kind of istance, when we are trying to do the best we can, but still can't make ends meet? If I had about 5 more kids, and had not married any of their father's, or just decided that I didn't feel like working, I could get all kinds of government help. Does this sound fair?
