Suggestions for possible relocation to Charlotte NC?

We're a black family looking to move to an area with a great high school - one that has some diversity. Looking for a great upscale apartment first - to get the lay of the land before settling on an area for home purchase. Would the Raleigh-Durham area have better possibilities? Please help!
