It lets air in and helps it mix and rot down more efficiently. Mine is in the garden and is full of kitchen vegetable scraps, gr, odd egg boxes brokwn up etc., etc. Its a great form of recycling and I get at least 2 or 3 big sacks of compost a year to use on my garden!
